You've probably heard of the man in the moon, but did you know about the woman? According to an ancient Chinese story, the dark shapes we see on the full moon are the woman Chang'e, who has been stranded up there alone but for the company of an elixir-making rabbit. Listen to me tell the first part of the story. Part 2 will be posted tomorrow.

In this collection of essays, Slattery explores the related themes of memory, myth, and metaphor, drawing material from literature, poetry, and current events. In "The True Terror of Terrorism," he suggests that the loss of Trust, necessary to maintain "civilized space," may be the greatest loss. "Trust is a virtue," he writes, "security its pale shadow."
